I need Web Design for Dummies!

I’ve been trying to figure out WordPress’ inner workings and I am not really getting the hang of it. I know it’s meant to be a simple layout for ease of use, but I also use it to practice with other projects I have on hand.

Either my skills are extremely underwhelming, or I’m trying to make this system do too much, more than what it’s designed for.
